Ghana’s defensive line will be without one of its main pillars on Tuesday after Alexander Djiku failed to recover from an injury sustained during international duty.
The experienced defender was forced off the pitch during the Black Stars' 2-0 defeat to Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké.
Despite the setback, Djiku remained hopeful of making a quick recovery and expressed his determination to do everything possible to be fit for the match.
However, medical assessments confirmed he would not be ready in time for the upcoming Group C clash. This injury comes as a recurring frustration for both Djiku and the national team setup.
The central defender previously missed Ghana’s entire 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign due to persistent fitness issues and had only recently rejoined the Black Stars squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
His latest absence deals a significant tactical blow to head coach Carlos Queiroz, who is striving to rebuild momentum and get Ghana's qualification journey back on track.
With Djiku sidelined, Carlos Queiroz must reshuffle his backline to ensure defensive stability against The Gambia.
Among the primary candidates to step into central defense is Jonas Adjetey, who earned praise after delivering impressive performances during Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
As Ghana hosts The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, a disciplined defensive performance will be essential for the Black Stars to claim their first victory in Group C and keep their qualification hopes firmly intact.

Alexander Djiku’s absence presents a tough challenge for the Black Stars, but it also opens the door for rising talents like Jonas Adjetey to prove their worth on the big stage.
As Ghana welcomes The Gambia to Accra, securing three points is non-negotiable for Carlos Queiroz’s side.
