Safina Adizatu Mohammed, a former Level 100 Biological Science student at the University of Ghana, Legon, will face a seven-member jury over her alleged involvement in the tragic death of her Canadian-based boyfriend, Frank Kofi Osei.
The scheduled jury trial marks a major milestone in a case that began in July 2022 following a gruesome discovery in Ashaley Botwe, Accra.
The accused, Safina Adizatu Mohammed, who has formally pleaded not guilty to murder charges, was a first-year student at the University of Ghana at the time of the incident.
The deceased, 37-year-old Frank Kofi Osei, was a Ghanaian national residing in Canada who was visiting the country.
According to prosecution records presented to the court, police officers at Lakeside Estate received a distress call at approximately 5:00 a.m. on July 26, 2022, reporting a "misunderstanding at her apartment at Ashaley Botwe School Junction".
Investigators reported that a violent struggle erupted during the altercation, ultimately resulting in Osei's death.
Upon arriving at the scene, a dispatched police patrol unit spotted an unregistered white Toyota Tundra pickup parked at the entrance of the apartment building, which was later confirmed to belong to Osei.
Near the driver's door of the vehicle, police discovered Osei's naked body lying face down with multiple severe stab wounds across his upper torso.
Crime scene investigators observed that although the apartment had been cleaned, visible bloodstains remained on the wall alongside traces of blood on the floor, suggesting that the victim's body had been dragged out of the top-floor residence.
Safina was not present at the apartment when the police arrived but was subsequently located at Obinim Junction in Ashaley Botwe, where she was taken into custody.
Police investigators retrieved a knife from the apartment believed to be the weapon used in the stabbing.
During police interrogation, Safina initially admitted to stabbing Osei during an argument at approximately 1:00 a.m. on July 25, 2022.
However, she later altered her statement, alleging instead that she had left Osei alone in the apartment and returned to find him dead.
Prosecution documents further allege that Safina contacted another boyfriend, Michael Fiifi Ampofo Arku, residing in Kumasi.
Arku allegedly traveled from Kumasi to Accra the following day and assisted Safina in moving Osei's body from the apartment down to the parked pickup truck.
It is further alleged that Safina handed Arku a bag containing some of the deceased’s personal belongings and items to be disposed of in Kumasi.
Arku was subsequently arrested by law enforcement, though he has presented an alibi maintaining he was not present during the killing.
When trial hearings open before the seven-member jury, the state is expected to call a total of nine witnesses to establish its case against the accused.
The upcoming trial of Safina Adizatu Mohammed underscores the commitment of Ghana's judicial system to deliver transparent justice through jury trials in capital offenses.
As nine prosecution witnesses prepare to testify, the legal proceedings will showcase forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and cross-examinations at the High Court in Accra.
