Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has urged journalists to revive their campaign against illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Expressing concern over the dwindling media attention on galamsey, Dwumfour highlighted the positive impact of past efforts and suggested that sustained actions by authorities could have led to improvements in the state of water bodies.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day 2024 event held at the Koforidua Technical University on Friday, May 3, Dwumfour emphasized the GJA’s commitment to leading a robust media campaign for environmental protection and the nation’s welfare.

He called on journalists to resume their concerted efforts against galamsey, citing the past success of collective action in raising awareness and prompting action from authorities.

Dwumfour lamented the regression in governmental actions against galamsey, noting that withdrawing from journalistic duties on the matter could exacerbate harm to the nation.

In addition to galamsey, Dwumfour urged journalists to address other critical environmental issues such as sanitation and climate change. The GJA plans to unveil a comprehensive agenda on these environmental concerns soon.

Furthermore, Dwumfour called on duty bearers to take decisive actions to combat deforestation, emphasizing the importance of accepting responsibility and implementing measures to prevent the devastation of Ghana’s land.
