In a major milestone for Ghana’s digital connectivity, telecom market leader MTN Ghana is preparing to roll out commercial 5G services across the nation. This development follows an official notification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) granting MTN access to critical mid-band and low-band spectrum frequencies required for next-generation mobile broadband.
For Ghanaian mobile subscribers, tech enthusiasts, and digital businesses, the upcoming 5G rollout promises faster data speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced online experiences. As internet and data usage continue to surge across Ghana, MTN's strategic investment marks a pivotal moment in the country's telecommunications evolution.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) invited telecommunication operators to apply for spectrum licenses in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and 3 GHz mid-band frequencies to facilitate 5G deployment and mobile broadband expansion across Ghana. Following this process, MTN Ghana was formally notified of its successful selection for spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands, a acquisition valued at approximately US$202 million. MTN is currently finalizing the necessary regulatory formalities and payment obligations associated with securing these spectrum licenses.
Addressing financial planning and investor expectations, MTN disclosed in a notice to shareholders that
“the licence payments have been incorporated into the company's equity free cash flow outlook”.
Once the formal spectrum licenses are issued, MTN Ghana plans to integrate the new 5G spectrum into its existing network infrastructure. This integration is designed to significantly boost overall network capacity, improve service reliability, and elevate customer experience nationwide. Furthermore, the deployment will play a vital role in accelerating high-speed 5G mobility and supporting broader home connectivity solutions for households across Ghana.
Highlighting the strategic magnitude of this milestone, MTN expressed appreciation to its stakeholders, stating that “the company appreciates the continued support of its shareholders and other stakeholders as it undertakes this strategic investment”. As the company moves toward the active deployment phase, it has committed to keeping consumers, investors, and the general public updated on material developments.
The upcoming launch of 5G services by MTN Ghana represents a transformative leap forward for the nation's digital economy. By securing $202 million worth of 700 MHz and 3 GHz spectrum licenses from the NCA, MTN is positioning itself to deliver faster mobile data, reliable home broadband, and seamless digital access to millions of Ghanaians.
As 5G technology rolls out, individuals and businesses alike stand to benefit from unprecedented connection speeds and improved network capacity.
