Intra-African travel has taken a major leap forward as Uganda Airlines officially launched its direct flight operations into Ghana, marking a landmark moment for West-East African connectivity. The national carrier’s arrival at Accra’s Kotoka International Airport provides business travelers, tourists, and the Ghanaian diaspora with a convenient new bridge between West and East Africa.

As air travel demand grows across the continent, this new four-times-weekly service promises to expand passenger choices, stimulate economic cooperation, and bolster Ghana’s standing as a leading regional aviation hub.

Ghana’s aviation industry received a significant boost on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, when Uganda Airlines officially commenced its scheduled flights to Accra. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe formally welcomed the inaugural flight, hailing the entry of the Ugandan national carrier as a key development for the nation’s transport infrastructure. Speaking at the welcoming ceremony, Mr. Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuous investment in modern aviation facilities, aiming to consolidate Ghana’s position as a preferred international gateway in West Africa.

The new route operates four times weekly, connecting Entebbe, Lagos, and Accra. Rather than flying non-stop, the aircraft touches down in Lagos, Nigeria, before continuing to Accra. To service this expansion, Uganda Airlines is utilizing a Boeing 737-800 aircraft wet-leased from Ethiopian Airlines—a strategic arrangement where the lessor provides the aircraft complete with crew, maintenance, and insurance. This wet-lease structure enables Uganda Airlines to efficiently scale its operational reach across the continent without immediately expanding its own fleet footprint.

Highlighting the overarching vision behind the new service, Mr. Girma Wake, Chief Executive of Uganda Airlines, noted that opening operations in Ghana directly strengthens air links between West and East Africa, making intra-continental travel far more accessible and seamless. Echoing these sentiments, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), pointed out that the airline’s entry reflects Ghana’s growing appeal to global aviation investors. She stated,

“The arrival of Uganda Airlines in Ghana represents a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two countries. Beyond expanding travel options for passengers, this new service is expected to enhance connectivity, stimulate tourism and culture, facilitate trade and strengthen economic cooperation between Ghana and Uganda”.

For Ghanaian and East African travelers, the introduction of this route addresses a long-standing structural challenge across the continent: limited direct air connectivity. For years, moving between West and East Africa often required circuitous transit stops through major hubs like Nairobi or Addis Ababa. By introducing a direct Entebbe-Lagos-Accra option, Uganda Airlines injects much-needed competition into the market, giving passengers wider choices and potentially driving down competitive airfares.

Furthermore, this operational milestone aligns with Uganda Airlines' broader goal of constructing a commercially viable network centered around its Entebbe hub while opening up lucrative trade and business partnerships across the region.

The launch of Uganda Airlines’ service to Accra represents far more than just another flight schedule; it is a catalyst for enhanced trade, cultural exchange, and economic synergy between Ghana and Uganda. By bridging West and East Africa with reliable, four-times-weekly connections, the airline opens up fresh avenues for Ghanaian entrepreneurs, tourists, and investors. As regional integration takes center stage, initiatives like this serve as vital stepping stones toward a seamlessly connected Africa.
