The government has announced a significant leap forward in the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, moving from preliminary preparations into the critical design and procurement stages.

The road to a modernized expressway has reached a pivotal turning point as the government finalizes the comprehensive detailed design for the entire stretch.

According to the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, the immediate priority is ensuring these technical blueprints are perfected before opening the floor to a competitive procurement process aimed at selecting the most capable contractors for the job.

Minister Agbodza emphasized the gravity of this project during a press briefing on September 7, 2026, stating,

The next plan is to get the full detailed design and then now begin to work out the procurement process to select a qualified contractor or contractors to get it done.

This meticulous approach ensures that the construction phase meets international standards and provides long-term value for the investment.

This project is being championed as a generational intervention that aligns with President John Dramani Mahama's vision of leaving behind a transformative legacy for the nation.

Minister Agbodza drew parallels between this expressway and the iconic infrastructure projects of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, such as the Tema Motorway and various national ports, which continue to serve the country decades later.

Speaking on the importance of creating lasting monuments of progress, the Minister remarked,

The president's vision is that we should do something so that the generations ahead of us to say that when we were also here, we did something that is remarkable.

This sense of historical purpose is backed by tangible progress on the ground; the Ghana Armed Forces have already cleared 175.6km of the right-of-way along the corridor, completing this task ahead of the original schedule.

Once the dual-carriageway is fully operational, it is expected to drastically improve regional integration, boost domestic trade, and set a new standard for mobility within the West African sub-region.
