The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected power supply to the Accra Sports Stadium due to an outstanding debt of GH¢400,000 owed by the facility.
The disconnection occurred on Monday evening, impacting the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic football qualifier match between Zambia’s women’s national team and Ghana’s Black Queens, which is scheduled to take place on Friday.
This is not the first time that power supply to the stadium has been disconnected due to unpaid debts. In March 2022, the National Task Force of ECG disconnected power to the stadium for a debt totaling GH¢508,000.

Similar situations have occurred in other facilities managed by the National Sports Authority (NSA). For example, in April 2023, the power supply to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale was cut off by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) due to an outstanding debt of GH¢466,000.
Despite the power cut, the Accra Sports Stadium is still expected to host the crucial Olympic qualifier match. Additionally, the stadium is scheduled to be the venue for all the men’s football matches at the 2023 African Games, starting on March 8. The facility will also host two other events: sambo and wrestling.
The relevant authorities will likely work to resolve the outstanding debt and restore power to the stadium to ensure the smooth operation of these events.
